FAQ

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people consider becoming a mechanic. It's actually the easiest way to start. Either work for someone else's shop or you can start your own.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

After completing the training, you'll be ready to start work.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. After registering, you'll be required to meet certain standards.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. They might specialize in one area, such as brakes and tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. This allows employers to pick the right candidates for their jobs.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages do not belong to any dealership. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages may not be better places to work. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

It is possible to work long hours, but not have any control over the day.

Expect to earn lower salaries than if you were working in a dealership.

It's possible to switch between jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

It's not always easy to find a job. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

What does it take for a mechanic to be a good one?

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeships typically last three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
