FAQ

How can I prepare myself for a mechanic apprenticeship

It is important to have an understanding of what you are going into. You need to understand the mechanics of cars and how they work. You will be able to know exactly where to begin when you arrive at the garage for your first day.

Also, you need to know how fix simple problems, such as tires and lights that aren't working.

You will be able to diagnose and repair problems yourself.

Also, it is important to know how parts fit together so that you can put them back together.

Finally, you should be able use tools safely.

All these things will help you to become a competent mechanic.

What length is an automotive mechanic apprenticeship?

A three-year apprenticeship in automotive mechanics takes. This includes two years in school and two as an apprentice. The first year is dedicated to learning the theory and practical skills of the trade. You'll also learn the safe and efficient use of tools during this first year. After the completion of the first year, you will spend another year on the job training. Here you'll gain valuable experience in different trades. These years will offer you the opportunity to attend formal classes.

The last year of your program will be spent earning qualifications and becoming certified. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), which are awarded after passing exams covering specific topics within the industry. Additionally, HNCs are Higher National Certificates that cover general subjects such management, customer service, and business administration. City & Guilds certificates can be obtained for individuals who want to learn certain trades.

What is the difference in a mechanic and an auto technician?

These two jobs are very similar but not identical. An automotive technician maintains cars, while a mechanic repairs them.

A mechanic must be skilled in manual dexterity and able to complete simple tasks quickly. A mechanic must be able diagnose and fix problems quickly and accurately.

A technician in automotive is more technical than a mechanic. They need to be able use tools such drills and wrenches, and read blueprints.

They should also be capable of safely performing complex procedures. They must also be familiar with different types of engines and electrical systems.

They must also be capable of understanding how parts interact.

This means that mechanics usually make less money than automotive technicians. But there are many opportunities for both jobs.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process is different depending on where you live. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
