How to find a good mechanic

car accessories for long travel

While ASE-certified repair shops have the best reputations for mechanics, there are some who are not honest. It is a good idea to look for a mechanic's license or certificate of training before handing over your car. Here are some tips to help you find a reliable mechanic. Experience and specialization are important factors as well. You want a mechanic with all these qualities to be your best choice for vehicle repairs.

ASE-certified mechanics

An ASE certified mechanic's education goes beyond the basics. Along with the professional benefits that a mechanic may receive, certification also protects consumers because it ensures that the mechanic is knowledgeable and well-trained. Because it is more valuable for customers, certification can increase a mechanic's earning potential. Many ASE certified mechanics have used their education credits towards pursuing higher salaries. Because these tests are so challenging, only around two-thirds (or less) of mechanics can pass them on their first attempt.

Certificates of training or licensure

Auto mechanics with ASE certification have extensive experience working on different types of vehicles. Additionally, they are familiar with the specific details of each maker. Automotive dealership owners choose to have skilled mechanics work on their vehicles because they are able to charge higher wages and offer higher service fees. Their credibility is also enhanced by the fact that they have access to many innovations from automobile manufacturers. But not all states require auto mechanics have any type of certification.

Experience

Asking family members or friends who have cars to recommend a repair shop can help you. Ask your neighbors or friends who are familiar with fixing cars. The best recommendation is word of mouth, because it's more credible than reading a review online. If your friends and family don't know a mechanic, you can look up their reputation on sites like Yelp or Angie's List to get a list of highly recommended mechanics.

Specialization

You should be looking for the best mechanic if you are in search of a new one. The first thing is to determine what your interests are and find out which specialization would be most beneficial for you. There are three main specializations: diagnosticians, transmission professionals, and electric and emissions specialists. These are all excellent specialties to think about if this is a field you're interested.

Yelp

Yelp allows you to search for mechanics from many locations. You can limit your search by distance, ZIP code, and even ratings and reviews. You should aim for a balance between high ratings and substantial reviews. Some reviews may be glowing but they might not accurately reflect the customer experience. You should be skeptical of reviews from employees. Instead, seek reviews that show both quality and value.

Dealerships

It can be difficult to find a qualified mechanic for your vehicle, no matter if it needs repairs or a tune-up. This article shares tips for finding a reputable mechanic. You should start by asking around your immediate community, whether it be your Facebook friends, neighbors, or even your mailman. Trustworthy sources will give you more reliable recommendations than anonymous online critics. Check out the suggestions you get after narrowing down your mechanics.

How To

How to Become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must be able to diagnose problems and make repairs quickly, safely, accurately, and efficiently.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process is different depending on where you live. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. In addition, some states license technicians immediately after they receive their license, while others wait until they have completed at least six months of employment as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeships last for three years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
