FAQ

What qualifications are necessary to become a truck driver mechanic?

Although you don't need to have any formal qualifications, your experience working with trucks and engines is invaluable. Your experience is valuable because it allows you to diagnose problems quickly, efficiently and effectively.

Your knowledge of diesel technology will allow you to identify the parts that are required to fix our vehicles.

How can I fix my automobile as a hobby.

Why not make it a hobby if you're interested in cars? You can repair them, buy their parts, sell them, or just have fun with them. It would make a great pastime if you're looking for something different to do.

But it is not easy to turn this into your full-time occupation. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Also, you will need to put a lot of money into it.

It is best to avoid getting involved in car accidents unless you have good reasons.

Is it possible to work as an automotive mechanic?

It is possible. Many garages post their vacancies online. Many people apply simply because they think it might make them feel good. You can apply for several places to see if they are accepting student applications if you want to get your foot in their door. You could also ask your family and friends if they know anyone in the industry. They might be willing to recommend someone.

How long is an automotive course?

A course in automotive lasts three years.

The first year is spent learning about cars and theory. Practical training is the second year. You will learn to drive, fix engines and perform other tasks around the car. The final year is spent doing a placement at a local garage, which gives you experience in fixing real-world problems.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

Car mechanics can find work in three areas:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is the place most people begin to consider becoming mechanics. It's also the easiest way you can get started. Either work for someone else's shop or you can start your own.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It will not allow you to repair major engine problems.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. Because these jobs don't have to be associated with any company, they can generally offer better wages than dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

Expect to earn lower salaries than if you were working in a dealership.

It's possible to switch between jobs. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

Automotive technicians provide repair and maintenance services to vehicles. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
